Introduction

A pianist entertainsThe piano is a remarkable instrument. It is the only acoustic instrument that allows you to play both the melody and accompaniment at the same time, thus providing both yourself and others with immense enjoyment and enabling you to become a "one-man orchestra" on your own.

A short ode to the piano follows:

	M E A N D M Y P I A N O

	88 keys, a wonder
I express myself on the blacks and whites
	Fluidly I play
		Just like talking
Another language with which to say

	A million words
	Expressed in 3 minutes
		Of song
			Spontaneous and from the heart
A discrete system of modes and keys
I scale the ivories all day long

	Sitting there
		It could be forever
	I escape briefly to paradise
	How Mozart must have felt
		I can ponder
	On the piano
	My dreams I realise

Learning The Piano

Anyone can learn how to play the piano, though starting at a young age would give you a significant advantage as young fingers are more flexible and agile. Here are some general points to consider before deciding whether the piano is the instrument for you:

    1. Understanding
      • How does a piano "work"?
      • What is piano-playing all about?
      • What are piano players expected to do?
    2. Interest
      • How much do you know about music in general?
      • Why are you interested in learning to play the piano?
      • Why have you chosen the piano over other instruments?
    3. Commitment
      • Are you prepared to spend time practising?
      • Do you recognise and accept that training to become a good player takes time, devotion and dedication?

Choosing The Right Piano

Once you are sure that you would like to learn how to play the piano, you should then think about getting one, as it is almost impossible to learn how to play without having an actual keyboard in front of you to touch, feel and experiment with.
