Greetings to everyone taking part in FET5622 this semester. I completed 5621 last year and found the experience extremely useful and enjoyable.

I am a technology teacher in a seconday High school in Brisbane Australia. My experiences with multimedia in the classroom range from making simple movies in windows movie maker to macromedia content such as flash and fireworks. Throughout these topics students seem to respond with enthusiasm and motivation when the subject is more practical and visual compared to textual learning.

The two sites i have inlcuded are

How Stuff Works how stuff works

Description:This site allows users to access information regarding the basic operations of almost anything technical. Information is supported by both animated content and video links.

Description:This site allows users to access various information regarding NASA space missions. The site is supported by video and image galleries. Podcasts can be downloaded. A kids fun zone has interactive flash games and tutorials. Teachers and students have resources provided.

Critique of Multimedia:Animated content is not frequently shown however diagrams are used to support information throughout various pages. Where possible diagrams have basic animation to illustrate topic. Animations seem to be simple flash based.

Video content is directed by both in text links and a library is offered. All videos seem to be mostly instructional snippets. For example someone adding a hard drive to their computer. The visual aid of seeing someone do what is explained is very valuable particularly when dealing with technical issues.

Critique of Multimedia:The site offers videos of various events such as mars landings and rover operations.Media is either actual footage or photograph compilations of various events that have occured within various NASA projects. Videos vary in length from 1minutes up to 10minutes.Podcasts are available detailing various projects including transcripts.

Press releases and fact sheets are available.

The site (not including kids fun zone) has limited or no flash animation.

The most important characteristics of well designed multimedia i consider are 1. Functionality - the media contributes to the reader as an educational support or supplement (assists understanding). 2. Logical application - the media is relevant to the audience and the topic being viewed.

A well designed multimedia piece doesnt take a long time either to download or to view.
