'The Circle' inside Parramatta Jail used to house intractable prisoners during the 1960s and 1970s. Bernie Matthews and Mick Anderson tried to escape from this section of the prison 8 December 1971 by attacking three prison guards and taking their keys. The escape attempt was thwarted after tower guards raised the alarm. The Circle was dismantled during the 1990s.

The Back Yards at Bathurst Gaol. After the 1974 Bathurst Riot prison guards herded all prisoners into these yards before forming two rows and systematically baton-whipped each prisoner as they were forced to run the gauntlet to a waiting convoy of prison vans that took them to other prisons.
