Change of name for the Australian Nursing Council

It is with great pride and pleasure that the Australian Nursing Council announces a change of name to the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Council.

A resolution at the June 2004 Meeting of Council to commence the process to change the name was passed unanimously. The inclusion of Midwifery in the title reflects the world wide trend to recognize the profession of Midwifery as a distinct discipline separate from nursing.

The Council would like to thank the Australian College of Midwives Inc and the former Australian Midwifery Council staff for their assistance and advice during the change of name process.

The ANMC sends greetings to all Australian Midwives and looks forward to working with you to progress the agenda and recognition of Midwifery.

Have your say on the ANMC’s Draft Scope of Practice and Competencies for Midwives

The project is now into its third round of consultations.  See the latest update on the progress of this project on the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Council (ANMC) website.

One of the issues that has arisen for discussion and debate in these workshops is the definition of the scope of practice of the midwife.  The consultants are have developed a further round of documents for wide consultation with midwives that take into account the feedback already received from midwives who attended the workshops.

Take the time to view the ANMC Competency Project Round 3 Consultation document  There is also an on-line survey which gives all midwives the opportunity to provide feedback on the round 3 consultation documents, whether or not you’ve been able to participate in any of the workshops
